Complete guide to the Ngrupuk night schedule, parade routes in Denpasar, and viewing etiquette for travelers.
The Grand Ogoh-Ogoh Parade on Ngrupuk Night
The eve of Nyepi, known as Pangrupukan (Ngrupuk), features the vibrant Ogoh-Ogoh parade across Bali's villages and cities.
Significance of Ogoh-Ogoh
Ogoh-ogoh are gigantic papier-mâché and bamboo statues depicting Bhuta Kala (demonic elements of nature and the human subconscious). Parading and subsequently burning or purifying them symbolically cleanses negative spiritual energies before the island enters complete silence on Nyepi.
Best Viewing Locations
- Denpasar: Catur Muka Statue intersection and Puputan Badung square.
- Kuta & Legian: Ground Zero monument and Pantai Kuta main road.
- Ubud: Main Ubud Palace intersection (Puri Saren Ubud).
