Bali Temple Etiquette & Visitor Rules

Essential rules for visiting sacred Balinese temples. Learn sarong dress codes, respectful behavior, and cultural norms.

Proper Etiquette When Visiting Temples in Bali

Balinese Hindu temples (Pura) are active places of devotion and sacred energy. When entering, travelers are expected to abide by traditional customs.

Mandatory Dress Code

  1. Sarong (Kamben): Wrap around the lower waist covering knees and legs.
  2. Temple Sash (Senteng): Tied around the waist over the sarong, symbolizing binding worldly desires before meeting the divine.
  3. Sacred Conduct

    • Do not step on temple offerings (Canang Sari) on walkways.
    • Keep noise levels low and do not cross in front of people actively praying.
    • Respect signs marking the innermost sanctum (Jeroan), which is often reserved exclusively for worshippers.
